👋 GOOD MORNING — Happy Thursday!! Getting close to the weekend — I hope your week has gone well. It’s definitely going well for slugger Eugenio Suárez, who appears to be on the move to Seattle according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Complete details of the deal and the reported return can be found in the Quick Hits section below!

Today’s newsletter deviates from anything I have done since we kicked off the PHNX Sports Daily last year — dedicating an entire issue to your incredible reactions to yesterday’s post. D-backs fans from all over emailed and replied on social media, sharing thoughts on Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo’s job status, and I wanted to share your responses. So I hope you enjoy, because this morning, you’re the star of this show!

Make sure you stay tuned to our incredible PHNX Diamondbacks crew during today’s trade deadline, because there are still a lot of highly sought after names that will likely be moved before today’s 3 pm deadline, in addition to Suárez.

Finally, I just want to issue a correction on something I got wrong the other day: I incorrectly listed Cardinals cornerback Jaden Davis as a rookie in Monday’s newsletter, when in fact he was drafted in 2024. I apologize for this error — I’m human!

On to the show!

‘Had Nearly A Decade’: Diamondbacks Fans Sound Off

You heard from me — I’ve said my piece.

Now, it’s your turn.

Yesterday’s PHNX Sports Daily highlighted, in this writer’s opinion, why the Diamondbacks need to move on from manager Torey Lovullo at the conclusion of the 2025 season. TLDR: There’s no need to fire him in-season, and it’s hard to find anyone (including myself) who isn’t grateful for all he’s done for this organization, but the club needs a new voice.

Boy, did you ever show out in your responses.

The concept isn’t new — a quick search on all of the most popular social media channels highlight a small percentage of Diamondbacks fans beginning to clamor for Lovullo’s dismissal following last year’s abysmal finish. But even that was an 89-win season — five more than the 2023 NL Pennant-winning team — and those dull murmurs have ratcheted up in volume as the team has stumbled through a second consecutive season.

So, what did you have to say about it all? Let’s dive in, because today, you’re the star of the PHNX Sports Daily.

Editor’s note: The below responses include every email reply I received, and I also picked a variety of responses to this PHNX Diamondbacks post on X). Diamondbacks Fans Sound Off on Lovullo’s Future

Via Email:

Marc C: Man, nice Torey was a great manager, but it's time to move on, they should have gotten rid of him a few seasons ago!

Dawn S: No I believe we need a new GM!!! After all, he is the one getting these players that can't play. As far as Torey, he isn’t the one out in the field playing the game; it’s the players (GM's fault again). Torey can only do so much with a player. It is up to the Player to earn their pay!!!!

Rowan S: Yes! Fire him!

Rick I: Yes, the Diamondbacks should have fired Lovullo when they lost 100 games in a season. His managerial gaffs have cost this team at least 15 wins, which would have us on top of the division.

John P: Absolutely fire the D-backs coach. He keeps being a big disappointment. He is not a motivator. He is just a guy who watches the game who is clueless. Reminds me of Biden. The team has good talent. Maybe there are some other coaches that should go, including the pitching coach. The closers have been a disaster in some areas.

Ramon A: I genuinely admire Torey — I believe he has built a positive clubhouse culture over the years, where you can see his guys really love and care about their teammates, and players always speak highly of him. That said, results have to matter. Nine seasons is a generous runway for any manager, and aside from the 2023 pennant run, there just hasn’t been enough tangible progress. Yes, injuries, roster churn, and under‑performing players share the blame, and no new skipper will wave a magic wand to fix these problems. Still, when you’ve had nearly a decade to establish sustainable success and it hasn’t materialized, a fresh voice might be the jolt a talented roster needs.

T Metzer (sorry, there was no first name): Yes, he keeps pumping up his team without holding players accountable. It's constant excuses why but nothing is ever done either by him or the coaching staff. Fire someone to make statement.

@nofiltergames: So he’s to blame for the injuries? Really?

@trentjordanfan: (in response to the above post): So him wasting back to back seasons allocating the highest payroll in franchise history while mismanaging the bullpen and making terrible decisions that costed us multiple wins isn’t his fault???

@KamiShadow: Can't use the injury excuse. Look at the team on the field, they all gave up. The other game they all ran into each other, then 3 fielders literally give up chasing a ball. Losing like 12-2 every game. It's done. He's got a losing culture because the team didn't capitalize off the run.

@Tier2_Power_God: No. Continuity is undervalued.

@Brandt734664211: He is a good manager for the most part, maybe a fresh start will help everyone.

@cjrj49: Are you serious? Lovullo and Hazen should have been fired months ago and maybe @DHallDbacks needs to be sacked too - this is all on Hall & Kendrick.

@indubtablist: I'd rather fire our strength and conditioning team.

@SothaChill: Very much a Buck Showalter situation. Great guy, players love him. Not the guy though if you want to actually win anything.

@GODN2A: It was months ago!!! And Hazen and the pitching and third base coach.

@jasonwoodard37: Hell no. Best around, love Torey.

@PatrickMcCourt3: He and Hazen are a great team. Keep him.

@SeltzerJackson: I like Lovullo if he will just be willing to change one thing. Stop destroying the momentum and removing players too soon, especially when they are pitching a shut out or hitting lights out. Also, they need one of those famous locker room blowups right now to revive them.

@DrakeDannenber3: I would rather fire the 3rd base coach and pitching coach first, then give him a short leash next season.

@_Hysterik_: I don’t think people understand managers are just fall guys. The analytics department is making the lineups the matchups. Torey is what he is. 2023. They listened to analytics to the decimal.

@JamesDAttwood: No way you sack Torey after all he has done to keep things from entirely spiraling back to 100+ losses. If the team could have avoided even 1/3 of the catastrophic injuries that they have suffered and were still here, I would be more concerned. Right now, back Lovullo.

@LDChris76: A new voice will not somehow make the bullpen any good or the starters more consistent or the lineup either. Lovullo should stay as long as he wants.

@IsntitsoTrue22: Exactly how did that work for the Suns. Monty Williams brought a nice culture, took the Suns to the Finals but then started to pick his favorite players & got stuck failing in the playoffs. Fired & hired in Detroit. Lovullo made the playoffs 2x in 9yrs. Under .500 record. Change.

@TheBrianBerlin: 100% disagree! Amazing coach and the results of the team this year was not his fault. I blame Mike for not addressing the bullpen during last off season. Even with all the injuries, poor starting pitching, and inconsistent offense if we had any decent bullpen would be in the race.

Roaring Bad Time: As if on cue, the Diamondbacks lost the third-and-final game against Detroit yesterday afternoon, getting swept at the hands of the Tigers while dropping their fifth straight game, and eight of their last nine. Arizona has not scored more than two runs in a game since a 4-3 loss to Houston on July 23.

Unfortunately, that was Geno Suárez’s last game as a member of the D-backs, because it was reported late last night that Arizona has traded the slugger to Seattle. In return, the Diamondbacks are set to receive:

  • 1B Tyler Locklear (Mariners’ No. 9 prospect per MLB Pipeline)

    • 24-year-old right-handed hitter who was drafted 58th overall in 2022

    • Is hitting .156 with two home runs and three RBI in 16 games with Seattle this season — his first MLB action

    • Hit .316 with 19 home runs and 82 RBI in 98 games with Triple-A Tacoma.

  • RHP Hunter Cranton (Mariners No. 16 prospect)

    • 24-year-old is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA, 14 strikeouts and three walks in 10 innings of work (10 games) with High-A Everett

    • Top pitches are his fastball and slider

  • RHP Juan Burgos (Mariners No. 17 prospect)

    • 25-year-old is 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work with the Mariners — his first MLB action

    • Arsenal includes fastball, slider and cutter

Make sure to stay tuned to PHNX Sports all day today as we cover any deals GM Mike Hazen completes prior to today’s 3 pm trade deadline!

Dillon the Villain: Does anyone work harder than our own Gerald Bourguet? Check out his latest in this summer’s series of player profiles, as he looks at the role Dillon Brooks will have on the upcoming season after being one of the more unheralded aspects of the Kevin Durant trade.

Feverish: The Mercury fell 107-101 to the Fever in Indiana yesterday, marking their fourth loss in five games following an incredible start to the season. Alyssa Thomas, Kahleah Copper and Sami Whitcomb accounted for 72 of Phoenix’s points, with Thomas leading the way among all scorers with 32.

The Mercury continue their road trip on Friday at Atlanta (4:30 pm, ion TV).

More to Watch: Sun Devils DT C.J. Fite was named to the preseason watch lists for both the Bronko Nagurski and Outland Trophy, which are awarded to the defensive player of the year, and the best interior lineman, respectively. Fite is one of only eight players in the nation to be named to both lists, and was also a preseason Big 12 All-Conference selection.

Congrats, C.J.!
